Grammy Award-winning Nicholas Payton is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, and social activist, known for his innovative approach to music that transcends genres. A New Orleans native, he honors the legacy of “postmodern New Orleans music” and Black American Music (BAM), a term he coined to encompass the full spectrum of Black-created music, from jazz to soul. A prodigy, Payton began playing trumpet at age four and had a professional career by age 10. With over 20 albums as a leader, he’s collaborated with icons like Cassandra Wilson, Common, and Dr. John. Payton’s works include The Black American Symphony and live performances of Sketches of Spain. A vocal advocate for cultural liberation, he strives to elevate consciousness through music, emphasizing life experiences and the energy of sound.
